This map was created with 12 Woolwich residents’ between March to July 2021, during the Covid Pandemic.

Click on the coloured map markers to reveal participants favourite places alongside a remix of fragmented personal stories, imaginations, anecdotes, frustrations, surprises, walk route instructions, vivid descriptions and photos.

The bright purple markers are places of convergence, representing sites that multiple people identified.

The map does not prescribe any particular wandering route or tour but offers a new, collective, counter-culture narrative of Woolwich that is unlikely to appear in any guide books. It highlights some of the more familiar, heritage and military attractions in Woolwich, spectacular architecture, the river, a plethora of green spaces, retail, hospitality as well many less familiar nooks, crannies and marginal spaces. In this way, the map makes the ordinary, extraordinary. It makes the strange familiar, and the familiar strange.
